Epiphyte, lithophyte (one who loves to grow on trees and rocky places in the jungles of Brazil) Vriesea Gigantea can truly be a gigantic thing, although this super slow grower takes a long while to get there. It's even suggested for terrariums when tiny. Stiff, stubby, yet graceful (and no spines!) tongue shaped and strappy leaves in muted, deep green are curiously marked with geometric yellow markings, more concentrated towards the center of the plant. Sometimes looking like a candle is flickering from inside the plant. Leaf tips may have a darkly translucent purple wash on them. Up to 30" and beyond in size when full grown (it takes just ages) Gigantea is grown for its fantastic foliage and massive size, although it will bloom eventually. This guy likes its center cup filled with water, just be sure to change the water weekly to keep it fresh and only water the soil when nice and dry. It's used to collecting rainwater and tiny animal droppings and plant bits to break down with special enzymes in the little pond and using the results for nutrients. A tiny recycling pond!
