Pretty Song of India was first officially noticed in 1786 by French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lanark. Grown as a tree in tropical climes and a houseplant everywhere, it is native to Mauritius, Madagascar, Mozambique, and some exotic isles in the Indian Ocean. In those exotic places it comes from the traditional medicine people used it to treat malaria, poisoning, and other diseases as well as decorate their gardens. The fruit is a favorite food for the endangered Malagasy lemur, in case you have one of those around! The lance-shaped leaves in a fresh green with wide, creamy bands along the edges spiral and spin and whirl around their stems making long, fluffy brushes of the stems. Some of the bottom leaves will shed to reveal Dracaena-like, beige, woody canes. Little clumps of white flowers, not much to look at but deliciously fragrant can appear in winter. Song of India was tested in the Nasa Clean Air Study and was declared one of the best plants tested to remove xylene and trichloroethylene and is effective in removing formaldehyde. A natural air purifier at work in your house. Put one in the baby's room! Slowly growing from a small, full bush shape to tree size, Pleomele is easy to prune to any shape, a perfect fit for any place you have. Add to that, it loves to be on the dry side and is completely happy with infrequent waterings. Perfect for the busy lives we lead nowadays.
