6" Fern, Maidenhair

$27.99
The epithet Maidenhair is a reference to the old use of the Fern in a natural shampoo used by young women. This most ethereal, frail looking fern is tougher than she looks. A cold hardy brake fern from the forest, she has waterproof, tiny, scalloped leaves in a misty, light green on tough and fibrous threadlike stems. Stems arise from a central clump with each frond tip a tiny, furled fist of green that slowly unfolds. This is a water lover. An airy, damp forest dweller like Maidenhair likes misting and soil evenly moist and plants will frizzle to a burnt crisp if left too dry but she will forgive you and completely resprout if she loses her leaves. Native Americans visiting the plant in damp, forested areas found the plant useful in dressing wounds and used the stems to make a fine black dye or stain. She will love a bright bathroom, steamy terrarium, or in a nice group of plants, thinking she is back in the misting forest..

Quick Care Guide:

  • Water - High (5):  Plants in this category prefer moist soil. Do not let the plant dry out in between waterings. Water when the soil is still lightly damp. Use a spray bottle to mist regularly to keep humidity levels optimal.
  • Light - Med/High (4):  Needs more light than most, but direct light not necessary. Can handle morning and afternoon sun directly on leaves.
  • Difficulty - High (5):  These plants require the most attention and are not the easiest to maintain. Not the best option for beginner plant-parents.
