4" Fern, Heart

$11.00

The Heart Fern was first spotted growing high in jungle trees of southeast Asia in 1859.  This little sweetheart will also be completely happy to live in your own shady glen. Flat, hairy stems flourish flat, hairy, emerald green, wrinkly and leathery, long heart shaped fronds, growing into a bushy little shape with most of the foliage the same height. The stems are black wires, strong and thin. It loves steamy terrariums and bright bathrooms and kitchens, but put it anywhere there's bright light, it's actually pretty sturdy. Some valuable medicines made from Heart Fern are for diabetes and heart valves. Wait, guess what we just noticed? Cute, perfect, little heart leaves pop out on top of the big leaves when they're mature and happy where the stem attaches to the leaf so a regular leaf will have a little crop of new hearts right on top. You can detach the leaf from the stem and lay it on moist soil in a big glass jar or terrarium where it can stay moist and steamy and start new, little ferns. Who doesn't want a potfull of hearts?

Quick Care Guide:

  • Water - Med/High (4):  Prefers more water than most, but soil can dry out periodically. Use a spray bottle to mist and increase humidity levels without soaking the soil and roots.
  • Light - Med/High (4):   Needs more light than most, but direct light not necessary. Can handle morning and afternoon sun directly on leaves.
  • Difficulty - Low/Med (2):  A little less finicky than most. Doesn't require much attention at all.
