Alocasia Frydek was found in the Philippines in 1920 by German nurseryman Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, a famous plant explorer who actually specialized in orchids. As for the name Frydek, it was really the name given to an obscure, early spotted version of the plant, quite rare and not around much but the name stuck and we call ours Frydek too. The leaves are the main attraction here. Huge, up to 18" arrowleaf sails with a deep vee at the top where the stem attaches are painted deepest pine green with a brilliant, wide white midvein and side veins (usually just 5 or 6 forks on each side). Newest leaves arrive in a fresher green til they settle down to deep pine. The result is dramatic tribal faces all looking at you (actually, they're facing the light) jut a few huge leaves to a plant. The whole plant gets to around 4' tall and wide, a big enough specimen to stand alone in a big pot or basket on the floor. He's very exotic and tropical jungly looking.
- Toxic: All parts of plant are toxic. Keep away from children and pets.
Quick Care Guide:
-
Water - Med/High (4): Prefers more water than most, but soil can dry out periodically. Use a spray bottle to mist and increase humidity levels without soaking the soil and roots.
-
Light - Medium (3): Plant prefers natural, diffused light. Can be placed in a spacious living room. Indirect light preferred. No direct sunlight on leaves.
- Difficulty - Medium (3): Not too difficult to keep happy, but does require some attention.
