6" Fern, Leatherleaf

$25.00

Leather Fern is the workhorse of florist shops, providing the backdrop and support of so many floral arrangements. Growing in 2' high clumps outside in the ground in temperate climes, it travels quite a bit crawling along the soil on thick, strong stolons (sideways, underground, rooty stems). In a pot, it's a beautiful fern, large triangle fronds in super shiny, deep, rich green on the strongest, rounded, brown stems jostling and joshing each other to fill the pot. Fronds with regular, toothy-edged pinnules (leaflets) are held on even little pinna ( feather in Latin, a little group of pinnules on a little stem) to a geometric perfection to the end of the frond. It's really a pretty fern in a pot and very easy to grow and tough as nails. Be sure to cut a few for your own flower arrangements.

Quick Care Guide:

  • Water - Med/High (4):  Prefers more water than most, but soil can dry out periodically. Use a spray bottle to mist and increase humidity levels without soaking the soil and roots.
  • Light - Med/High (4):  Needs more light than most, but direct light not necessary. Can handle morning and afternoon sun directly on leaves.
  • Difficulty - Low/Med (2):  A little less finicky than most. Doesn't require much attention at all.
