Vriesea Christiane is a beautiful member of the bromeliad family originally trekked to us from Suriname and Venezuela in the collecting bags of some determined plant hunter. An epiphyte, it hung out high in tropical trees of the jungle awaiting discovery gathering misty rains and running them down to its central cup, saving a little extra sip of water for later and a tiny waystation pond for nearby visiting wildlife (think tiny, as in insects and frogs). Leaves of leathery, emerald green, lightly lined with long veins rise and fall in a waterfountain shape and seem to last just forever. The flowers also seem to last just forever, too. All in candy-apple red, the stalk and long, flat feather of a bloom also sports side branched feathers for a fancy, extravagant show. Christiane will bloom for months, then let the baby pups take over growing to their ultimate bloom show.
