Sultry Black Pagoda Lipstick comes to us from hot, steamy rainforests of Java and Malay Peninsula, where it droops from trees, happily pollinated by brilliantly colored, iridescent sunbirds with long beaks curved to reach the nectar. Waxy, emerald green leaves are painted with an almost tribal pattern of sparky lime green. The newest leaves are acid/lime green then settle down to the emerald. Curiously, the undersides of the emerald parts appear purple when you look through them in bright light. With age, the green stems heavily hang straight down, with leaf tips that like to point downward. At flowering time, clusters of luscious lipstick flowers roll out of spiky, yellow sepal cups, starting with rich yellow, shading to apricot, on to ruby red and the scalloped edges dipped in deep maroon. As if that's not enough, some blooms manage to throw in a little lime green too. Like a lipstick plant but all those colors! A lovely gift from the exotic East to us.
