Splendid, pendulous Cleistocactus Colademonosis was first found hanging onto rocky cliffs in Bolivia, hanging on by sending strong, fibrous roots into the cracks between the rock faces, subsisting on any dry, rocky, sandy and fast draining soil it can find. Hanging down in fantastic, long, cylindrical tubes (up to a fantastic 8' and more) they are a sight to see. Each plant starts out as a single, medium green column with a rounded top rising out of the soil, an inch or two in diameter or so, completely covered in regularly spaced, tiny, little bumps (areoles) dotting the regular lengthwise ridges lining each column and then completely covered in a mutitude of tiny, white spines emanating from each areole in a star shape so very close together as to make the plant appear furry. Not to worry, these spines are soft and you can touch the plant without fear of getting stuck. So, those green columns will rise out of the soil and begin a natural curve after a few inches, looking for the edge of the pot so it can hang down that cliff, knowing it's supposed to. It's said the nickname "Monkey Tails" is because of its resemblance at that point of growth. The single stems can branch at the soil level too and send out a couple of fat Monkey Tails at a time. A bunch in a pot is quite amazing, imagine a cliff-full of them! Now, the flowers are the best part! When it flowers it looks like a flock of floppy, red butterflies landed all over the plant. Big, frilly, fluffy, triple-petaled flowers with a deep, narrow throat are a deep, rich, bright red with a tangerine glow inside. It flowers often, the whole plant is really fun!
- Drought Tolerant
- Pet Friendly
- Low Maintenance
Quick Care Guide:
- Water - Low (1): Needs very little water to survive. Wait until the plant is completely dry then fully soak. Drought tolerant by nature.
- High - (5): Plant needs a lot of light; direct is even better. These plants do best when placed on a window sill or next to a bright window. Avoid concentrated, hot light from window which may cause burning (magnifying glass effect).
- Difficulty - Low (1): These plants need barely any attention to thrive. Set it and forget it.
