Curcuma "Siam Tulip" it's called for its close resemblance to a beautiful tulip. It's related closely to our spice turmeric, growing from undersoil rooty rhizomes like turmeric. This one is native to Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, found in the wild in sweeping grasslands favoring sparse limestone soils. Curcumas are grown for their beautiful appearance in tropical gardens, Siam Tulips have a place of honor in the stately King Rama IX Royal Park in Bangkok. These versatile plants are also widely grown for cut flowers, the flowers being quite long lasting, and the flowers are actually edible and cooked as a vegetable. And we have them for you in pots as well. The foliage is quite tulip-like, medium bluegreen (and some a fresher green) lances, slightly cupped and pointing upwards just brushing the bottoms of the flowers. And now for the flowers. From the center rises a big torch on a green stem, shaggy with pale greenish cream sepals that stay on the stem under the flower a few inches. Large triangle shaped petals point up, in a vibrant fuschia/orchid pink, some redder than pink, tipped in a dark red with a few dark red veiny streaks running down the petals. The flowers are just a bit tulip-like. Very nice for a gift or just to grace your kitchen counter or dining table too.
