6" Pachypodium Lealii saunders

$34.01

Our Bottle Tree was first noticed and described by Fernando Costa Leal exploring around south Angola in the 1800s. Can you just imagine what he must have thought when he came upon them in the wild? Crazy, lumpy, thick, bulbous, brown trunks fat at the bottom, thin at the top, misshapen and strange, reaching the improbable height of almost 20'. The trunk tips sprout random branches, stiff and completely covered in thorns that can reach lengths of almost 12"! Parts of the year the branches are covered in small, oval, deep green leaves and beautiful bunches of frilly edged, white flowers bunch up at the tips. Now, this plant is definitely not doggy or kitty friendly (and in some cases not too people friendly) as the sticky, white latex sap is used for arrow poison by indigenous people. Protected from over collection in Namibia, you can get one from us if you feel adventurous. This is a plant only a collector of strange could love. By the way, SQ means he comes in a square pot.

  • Drought Tolerant
  • Low Maintenance

Quick Care Guide:

    • Water - Low (1):  Needs very little water to survive. Wait until the plant is completely dry then fully soak. Drought tolerant by nature.
    • Light - High (5):  Plant needs a lot of light; direct is even better. These plants do best when placed on a window sill or next to a bright window. Avoid concentrated, hot light from window which may cause burning (magnifying glass effect).
    • Difficulty - Low (1):  These plants need barely any attention to thrive. Set it and forget it.
